Ø Look around and become familiar with the Desktop of your computer.
Windows 3.1 looks very different from Windows 95 or 98. But you will be able to find the program components.
If you have Windows 3.1 your NETSCAPE ICON may be in a folder called Internet Applications. If you are unfamiliar with the PC Desktop, please find the PC BASICS packet.
Ø Look for the Netscape Icon

Netscape is called a Browser. It allows you to view work wide web pages. Internet Explorer is another popular browser.
Ø Double click on the Icon to open Netscape
Your Monitor will look something like this:

Across the top - is the title bar - it tells you the program and page that is open.
The next row down from the top is a tool bar.
The second row is an important TOOL BAR
Ø Click on each one at a time to view the drop down menus and the various options available. Some of these functions will be available through the use of other buttons as well.
The next row down is the NAVIGATION TOOL BAR:
The first on the left is a green ARROW labeled BACK. This is a wonderful navigation button. It allows you to go back through the pages so you can return one page at a time. Think of it as a book, the BACK button turns one page at a time backward and the Forward Button turns the pages forward.
RELOAD - will Reload the current page from the server. This is useful if the page is continually updated.
HOME - will return you to the page that is set as your opening page. This often is your school's HOME PAGE or your favorite search engine window.
The SEARCH BUTTON will take you to a Search Engine Window. For NETSCAPE it is set to take you to NETCENTER where you can enter keywords to search for and choose the search engine you wish to use.
From here you may search the web for just about anything you can think of. You will get to practice this soon;
Guide takes you to NET GUIDE
PRINT will print the current page as you see it.
SECURITY will give you security information.
STOP will stop loading a page. So if you made a mistake or a page is taking too long to load , you can use the STOP button to end the transfer.
The next tool bar is the LOCATION TOOL BAR:
BOOKMARKS: Often a wonderful resource page is the result of a long circuitous search. Bookmarks are a wonderful way to keep track of your favorite web sites. Once you find a site you can Bookmark it and return with the click of the mouse.
The next little icon is the drag icon. If you click and drag the icon it will place the page into your bookmarks or onto the tool bar.
The next long narrow box is the Locator box. This is where the URL - Uniform Resource Locator or the world wide web address . Each page in the web has an address. You can locate pages through a search or by typing in the address.
The Web has several wonderful tutorials for using the Internet. So let's get you going quickly.

NOTE: If at any time during our journey through Cyberspace, another window pops up, just click on the X in the upper right corner of the window and it will close. These and the flashy banners are paid advertisements- one of the ways the web can remain free.
Ø Move your mouse pointer to the arrow next to the box that says Netscape Search.
A drop down box will appear with the names of several search engines. All of those search engines and more will go looking for web sites for you. They all do it a little bit differently so each will return different sites. When performing detailed research, you may choose to use one or more search engines. Be sure to practice with several to see which one brings the types of results you like and presents them in a way you can understand.
Keep your selection NETSCAPE SEARCH and move your mouse pointer to the Keyword box immediately to the right.
